Installation
sorryihaventcalledyouback is a speculative installation using excerpts from email exchanges between my father and me.
The work is experienced through a life-sized Camera Obscura, uniquely designed and built for this piece. Acting as a room within a room, it creates a voyeurism allowing the viewer to observe from a removed perspective, un-observable to those outside. Inside is entirely black, distorting the viewer’s sense of depth perception. The only light source is the camera’s viewport, seemingly floating within a field of darkness. This detached position metaphorically parallels my father and I's complicated relationship. Our email communication is one of the few lenses I have to view what’s occurring in his reality. Yet, my physical and emotional distance places me in this conflicted voyeuristic position, regretfully only intervening when most convenient or comfortable for me, akin to a photographer observing through a viewfinder.
